This book is impactful and will resonate with your soul. It has a depth of spirit that few authors attain. It’s a soulful epic of a young girl inhabiting a culture of yesteryear but in all likelihood is unfortunately carried out somewhere today.

It is with great pleasure that I recommend this book to every reader who wants something beyond a harlequin romance. It will grip you from the first and entangle your emotions until you have finished the last page.

A story of tragedy, hope and love reflecting the harshness of living in rural Canada in the early twentieth century. The author switches from blunt conversations to flowing prose as she weaves a story full of shocking events and lovely surprises. Written from the heart.

What is beyond the white curtain? The title and first chapter of this book draws you into the life of Stephanie as she grows from a girl into a wife, mother and old woman. The author uses captivating dialogue and interesting characters to keep you turning the pages. If you want a good read with a compelling story and lots of twists and turns, I recommend that you read Shirley McGrath’s book!

I absolutely love this book…a beautiful read. I instantly connected to the characters in the story and especially with the beloved Stephanie. I loved how the author had us living through the struggles and challenges of Stephanie’s life as a child at home with her father, siblings and crazy step-mother. This book is thought-provoking, funny and heart wrenching. It has the reader thinking about the storyline and its characters long after it’s been read. Thank you Shirley McGrath for creating this beautiful story.

Beyond the White Curtain’ is an enthralling book that is light weight and full of warmth. Reading through the pages is like a journey through a warm summer field, relaxing, inspiring and exciting. McGrath’s gentle, observant and humble views on life are prevalent in every chapter and each chapter excites a different emotion and sense. ‘Beyond the White Curtain’ begs to be read in a comfy chair, in front of a fire, while the rain falls against the windows or when you just want to escape into a fantasy that encourages you to relax into the joy of life when you have finished.

Twelve-year-old Stephanie’s life is turned upside down when her dear Matka dies. The family is just beginning to pull itself together when calamity strikes again, in an unlikely fashion. As Stephanie tries to make sense of the changes in her life, what first seems a minor accident will lead to life-altering transformations-both for her family and herself. Gossip spreads quickly in small prairie towns, and the face people present in public can be far different from the one they wear in private. As Stephanie searches for the true love Matka promised her, she’s faced with hard choices. Family pulls her one direction while her heart pulls her another, and she must make a decision that will bring heartache to those she cares about-regardless of her choice. Strong and unfailingly kind, even in the face of overwhelming adversity, Stephanie cannot help but let her past color her future, even as she seeks to grow-as a woman, wife, and mother. Her unique spirituality and her mother’s death-bed guidance provide her with a lifeline, one she counts upon through the myriad obstacles she faces on her life journey, from true love separated by WWII, suspicious deaths, elder abuse, and revelations of unfaithfulness.
